This urban retreat is a modern day Utopia, located next to the ‘green lungs of the city’, Tiergarten. The name Das Stue comes from the Danish term for living room and the second you step into this ‘wunderbar’ hotel, you are made to feel at home.

Das Stue occupies an original 1930’s building, untouched by the war, that used to be home to the Royal Danish Embassy and many aspects of the original building and design are still in place, including the magnificent staircase. Its classicist facade mixes beautifully with the contemporary German and Danish influences that have been carefully brought together by the acclaimed Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola.
Whichever of the 78 rooms or suites you’re staying in, you’re more than likely to be immersed in the splendour of the captivating views that surround the hotel. Whether it be a direct view into the enclosures of the ostriches or antelopes in Berlin Zoo or of the salubrious beauty of Tiertgarten itself.

The hotel, which was featured in the Conde Nast Traveller Hot List in 2013, boasts a range of standout features. These include: the Stue Bar, which serves an array of 1920-30’s inspired cocktails and features many whiskeys and cognacs that aren’t readily available elsewhere in the German capital; a wine gallery – specialising in German and Spanish wines, offering over 400 unique bottles –; a three floor library, which has a range of books in both German and English and a Susanne Kaufmann spa, which has three treatment rooms, an indoor pool and a Finnish sauna. It also has terraces and salons to host corporate and exclusive events.

Das Stue also has two restaurants, which are under the direction of two-starred Michelin Chef, Paco Pérez.: The Casual, as the name suggests, is a relaxed dining experience and is also the restaurant that serves breakfast and provides the food for the 24 hour room service. The other is Cinco, a Michelin starred avant-garde molecular leaning Mediteranean restaurant. One of the standout experiences on their menu is the 25 course tasting menu.

Unfortunately, the latter mentioned restaurant was closed for refurbishment during our stay, so we were unable to sample any of the culinary delights on offer from the menu. We did, however sample the breakfast on both mornings of our stay. On the first morning, exhausted from a long night of taking in all that Berlin had to offer, we decided to make the most of the room service menu and opted for breakfast in bed.
Unable to eat our feast in bed – a cooked breakfast, continental selection, coffee, fresh juice and newspaper made it just too crowded. We made the arduous descent to the end of our kingsize to eat at the chairs and table that sat at the foot of our cloud like dream maker.

We decided to try out the full selection of breakfast options in the Casual restaurant on the second day, which serves from 06:30 am – 11:00 am on weekdays and 07:30 am – 12:00 pm on weekends and bank holidays. There is much more on offer on this menu, including a selection of Das Stue ‘specials’ (we recommend the huevos Rancheros).

In 2013, the hotel was cited as “The Coolest Hotel in Berlin Right Now!” and we would have to say that on this showing, it would still take some beating.
